Marching Band
More Fall 2009 Details
Dear OSU Marching Band Member,
Hello! I hope you are enjoying your summer. We are looking at the largest OSU Band since the late 1980s right now with over 200 of you signed up! It is going to be a great year and I am glad you will be with us. Please be sure to stay in touch if you have any questions or if your plans change.
As you can imagine with a larger band, it will be much more challenging for us to be organized and run smoothly. So, it is very important that you read this email carefully and return the webform at the bottom as soon as possible. If at any point you have questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me via email at osubands@orst.edu or call the band office at (541) 737-0544. You will receive one more mailing in September, just before camp with more specific details.
June Newsletter
If you have not yet done so PLEASE go to the June Newsletter and fill out the webform there:
http://osumb.oregonstate.edu/news/june09.osumb-news.html
We need your shoe order and dorm information now
Since we start earlier, we need to order the shoes September 8 to have them by the first game. Housing and Dining needs dorm information from us by August 31. So, please be sure you have supplied that information in the June Newsletter and email me if anything has changed. If you did not give us your hall and/or room number when filling out the June Mailing, please add that to the comments section on the webform below.
Important Scheduling Note
The season schedule, rehearsal schedule, and tentative Band Camp schedules all appear on the June Newsletter. Please note one additional performance on Friday, October 9 at Roseburg High School. We will leave campus around 2:00 p.m. and return that night.
Music on the Web
Almost all of the show music for the season is posted on the band website. Remember that the username is "osumb" and the password is "gobeavs."
Hearings for all woodwind and brass players will be on Thursday, September 17. Be prepared to play "Old Man River." This is not an audition for the band, but just a chance for us to hear how you play and to assign parts on the instruments that split. Choose the part that seems right for you to play for the hearing. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Instrumentation
Generally our instrumentation is going to be very good this year, but there are three areas we would like to improve. We would like to have 5 to 10 more Trumpets, 2 to 3 more Tubas and 5 to 9 more Color Guard. If any of you can play one of these instruments (or would like to learn) please let us know. We are hoping there might able a trombone player or two who can play tuba. If you know someone who is not yet signed up please encourage them to join!
We could also use 2 more Band Managers. These are the folks to move equipment such as ladders, the sound system, etc. they will fully be part of the band (be at all rehearsals, performances, trips, register for credit, travel and receive a stipend). If you know someone who would like to fill one of these spots please let me know.
Dorm Move In
If you have kept your information current (filled out the webforms for the June and August Newsletters) we will make arrangements for you to move into your dorm rooms on Thursday, September 17 beginning at 8:00 a.m. You will need to report to your dorm service center to check in and get your key. Please do not call University Housing—all of this goes through the Band Office. We will put out one more Newsletter in early September with exact instructions about band camp.
Early Move In
Due to changes in the way University Housing does business, no one will be able to move into their dorm rooms before Thursday, September 17. This means that those of you who need to be here on September 14 (Color Guard and Percussion) or September 16 (Section Leaders) will need to have another place to stay for those first few nights. On the webform below is a space for you to indicate that you need a place to stay and also a space for non-dorm-dwellers to offer up space for people who need to be here early. Please indicate if you need a place or if you can supply a place.
Early Season Games
We would like to invite those of you who are interested and available to play for the early season game on Saturday, September 5 with PSU. Kick-off time will be 11:30 a.m. and call time will be 8:30 a.m. We will only play in the stands that day--no marching. We can also supply cut-rate tickets for your family for this game. If you sign up for the game, we will send you exact details. Please sign up below to let us know you can do this game. Go to this link: http://osumb.oregonstate.edu/news/fall-signup.09.html
Gear
We will be using the same black rain jacket, orange polo shirt and black baseball cap from last year. New members will receive these for free; returnees will be billed for replacements. EVERYONE will need black trousers (No jeans or cargo pants, but trousers, like Dockers). This will be our uniform for the Cincinnati game on September 19. If you have any questions please let us know. Note: Everyone will receive a new Nike band tee.
Measurements and Fittings
Dave Manela and the office staff will be in charge of uniforms. We will do fittings on Thursday, September 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in 200 Benton Hall. If you are in Corvallis and can be fitted before September 17, please contact Dave Manela directly at david.manela@oregonstate.edu to set up an appointment. We will have someone here on the 17th to do alterations.
Tickets
This year the Athletic Department will be offering cut-rate tickets to all football games for all OSUMB members and families. You can buy the tickets online and they will be mailed to you.
